Flicker Street Studio: Classes and Workshops

Wednesday is open studio day from 2-4:30 for any student who is enrolled in a class. I think that making a painting or drawing takes time and concentration, so to be limited to 2 1/2 hours for a complicated piece would not be fair to the student. If I am going to set up the challenge, they need the space and time required to meet it. Wednesday afternoon is always a productive time. I usually paint with them.

A new space takes some getting used to and I am starting to feel more comfortable at Flicker Street. The familiar chaos that has always been part of my studio work at home is showing up so I know that the students and I are working in a natural flow. For the second round of investigation, I set up four vignettes that relate to four different artists. This broadens their historical knowledge as well as allowing them to try out different methods of constructing a painting.

Student Work
The students are very committed. They show up and are focused on their work. I set up a stilllife with folded colored paper for the first round of classes. This was a very difficult exercise and challenged the students on many levels: color, abstration, and light. I threw my students into the deep end and they swam to shore with some beautiful work!
Painting Class on Flicker Street
I am so excited about opening the new Flicker Street Studio in Memphis, Tn. Painting classes began in January. Flicker Street is a place for teaching, learning, and creating. Discussion and contemplation along with specific instruction on how to use different materials is my guiding focus as a teacher.
